  • Wild Mushroom Food Safety Certification - SOUTH CAROLINA - APRIL 20-21, 2024

    This 5 year mushroom foraging permit meets the criteria required by the state health departments and formally approved for the foraging and selling of wild mushrooms in the following states: South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Alabama, Pennsylvania, New York, Rhode Island. Signups will receive a study guide and slides 1 month ahead of the class.

    Limited to 30 people, and no refunds will be available for this event. We might be able to move you to another class in case of emergency.

    Brian has studied and practiced wilderness survival for more than thirty years. He leads commissioned hikes and events on private land teaching folks how to utilize many of our natural resources. These events cover game sign interpretation & tracking, orienteering, making shelter, clothing, tools, fire and identifying a number of edible plants and mushrooms.

    Brian is a member of the Mushroom Club of Ga. and the Alabama Mushroom Society and multiple online mushroom forums. Among other classes Brian teaches mushroom ID,  cultivation and Myco-remediation at the Linwood Nature preserve in Gainesville Ga. and through Lumpkin County Parks and Rec. in Dahlonega GA.

    Brian owns and operates Yahoola Valley Mushrooms in Dahlonega, Georgia through which he provides wild foraged and cultivated mushrooms to  farmers markets, health food stores and fine dining restaurants. Brian started and moderates of the Facebook group “Mushroom Hunters of North Georgia” to help connect local mushroom enthusiast with one another.

    Brian spends most of his free time in the woods foraging, observing wild life and expanding his knowledge of the land and the treasures it has to offer.

    According to state law, wild foraged mushrooms species must be individually inspected and found to be safe by an approved mushroom identification expert that: 

    (A) Has met the requirements of knowledge and passed an exam and 

    (B) Will harvest only those mushrooms species listed below (Check the Approved Species List for your state’s allowed species) : 

    • Chanterelles (Cantharellus spp. Exception C. persicinus)
    • Blue chanterelle (Polyozellus multiplex)
    • Morels (Morchella spp.)
    • Black trumpet (Craterellus fallax)
    • Lobster (Hypomyces lactifluorum)
    • Wood ears (Auricularia spp.)
    • Chicken of the woods (Laetiporus spp. Exception L. persicinus)
    • Beefsteak (Fistulina hepatica)
    • Hedgehog (Hydnum repandum, H. albomagnum)
    • Lions mane / Pom Pom / Bearded tooth / Bear’s head (Hericium spp.)
    • Oyster mushroom (Pleurotus spp. Exception Pleurotus levis, P. dryinus)
    • Cauliflower (Sparassis spp.)
    • Maitake / Hen of the woods (Grifola frondosa)
    • Blewit (Lepista nuda)
    • Honey mushroom (Armillaria mellea, A. tabescens)
    • Blue milky (Lactarius indigo)
    • Golden and burgundy milkies (Lactarius corrugis, L.volemus, L. hygrophoroides)
    • Pecan truffle (Tuber spp.)

We will take you on a journey and fill you in on all the things that mushrooms and fungi have done to preserve planet Earth for millions of years. We will also explore some innovative mushroom products that put Mother Earth First. See you there! 

    This is a potluck event, please bring a vegeterian dish with ingredients list. Mushroom Mountain will provide paper plates, paper cups (we will teach you how to compost them with mushrooms), beverages, and utensils.

    Many aspects of mushrooms, including medicinal properties, cooking, and mycoremediation to soil creation will be discussed along the way! 

    An experience that will last a lifetime for all ages!
